GRASSROOTS TV TURNS NOVICES INTO PROS
ASPEN, CO – GrassRoots TV 12, the nation’s first community television station entering its 35th anniversary year, is proud to announce the successful progression of its interns into the “real” working world. Over the last few years, GrassRoots has nurtured numerous interns including Quincy Gow who left the community station in 2005 and went on to work for Deep Dish TV in New York. He is currently in Bolivia working on a documentary regarding eco-diversity within that country. Quincy will finish his studies in 2007 at Antioch College. More recently, Ashley Allison, who became a GrassRoots intern after graduating from Appalachian State in 2004 and subsequently joined the staff as the studio and programming director in 2006, took a short-term sabbatical to be an associate producer on a PBS children’s program pilot in both Washington, DC and New York City.
The most recent intern, Cecile Cusine, is soon leaving GrassRoots to work at Serac Films in Boulder for noted adventure filmmaker Michael Brown as an editor and production assistant intern on expedition films. Cecile joined GrassRoots as a student in her final semester this summer at Universite´ de Savoie, France. She completed her final university credits through her internship, and held a live video conference via the internet from the GrassRoots studio to complete her degree. Jack Winton, a longtime intern volunteer, will graduate this semester with a degree in Film Production from the U.C. Santa Cruz film school, and plans to help out again at channel 12 this winter.
Although they were not interns, recent (class of ‘06) Aspen High School graduates, Jake Lansburg and Alex Beinstein, producers of “Meet the Press with Alex & Jake,” have gone on to Brandeis University and University of Chicago respectively where they expect to pursue their interest in communications with experience under their belts that many of their peers will not have yet had. Alex has landed his own radio interview show in Chicago, crediting his time at GrassRoots with developing his skill and confidence as an interviewer. Current AHS students, Olivia Fanizza and Caitlin Doyle have stepped in and now produce “Meet the Press with Caitlin and Olivia.”
The GrassRoots TV 12 internship program welcomes motivated, hard working, self-starters ready for a real-world work experience that will empower them to go on and make a valuable contribution to any organization. All GrassRoots interns receive one-on-one instruction in a hands-on learning environment where the staff and candidates work together to craft a positive experience for everyone involved. Some interns, for example, receive housing while others do not require this benefit. GrassRoots interns help with a variety of projects or aspects of the station including but not limited to linear and non-linear editing, producing and writing, directing, programming, studio and field camera, audio, and lighting.
According to Bradley Manosevitz, internship program director, “GrassRoots TV is a busy station producing over 750 of shows a year. An intern here has the double advantage of being exposed to all sides of working professional television station broadcasting 24/7 such as field production, studio production, programming, audio engineering, camera work, business management, and professional etiquette, as well as being encouraged to follow and develop their own individual interests. The intern leaves the program having a taste of all basic aspects of television production as well as a better idea of their area of specialty or interest.”
GrassRoots TV 12 encourages all local residents to use this open channel of communication to strengthen the fabric of our community life. It is our mission to reduce the restrictions and barriers to television access and to help all residents create locally relevant programming that is entertaining and noteworthy. GrassRoots TV 12 reaches approximately 15,000 cable viewer residents plus another 20,000 guest pillows from Aspen to the Ranch at Roaring Fork in Carbondale.
