Community Government Television, Channel 11

In April 2005, Aspen City Council, Pitkin County Board of Commissioners, and the Town Council of Snowmass Village launched CGTV (Community Government Television), channel 11 as the new home of governmental meetings.  The addition of channel 11 came in response to a growing need for more airtime by the three government entities and by GrassRoots TV 12.   CGTV, channel 11 is provided by Comcast Cable Company as part of its franchise agreement with Pitkin County.

“We have been talking for awhile about creating our own government TV station,” said Pitkin County Community Relations Director Nan Sundeen. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for all of us to offer a venue solely devoted to informing the public about the workings of their local governments.”

Over the years, as GrassRoots TV 12 has slowly filled its airwaves to capacity with locally originated community programming while continuing the live and re-broadcast city, town and county meetings.  “Original programming on GrassRoots has exploded,” said GrassRoots TV 12 Executive Director John Masters. “We currently air 31 regularly scheduled programs, of which 95% are conceived, underwritten and produced by community members. Moving government coverage to channel 11 greatly enhanced GrassRoots TV’s ability to create more consistent and predictable scheduling on channel 12, while giving local government all the time it needs on its own channel.”

“With nearly 7,700 cable subscribers in Pitkin County, Government TV Channel 11 has the potential to reach half of the homes in Pitkin County with valuable information about their local governments,” Sundeen said. In addition, GrassRoots TV12 reaches 15,000 total cable viewer residents plus another 20,000 guest pillows from Aspen to the Ranch at Roaring Fork in Carbondale.  Government programming on channel 11 will consist mostly of live and rebroadcast meetings. The remaining airtime will be filled with government bulletin board information as well as additional government – initiated programming.
